Our Sixth Grade Buddies program is a special part of the school year for both sixth graders and second graders! Throughout the year, sixth-grade students visit their second-grade buddies about four to five times. During these visits, the sixth graders take on an important mentor role and work hard to make each meeting fun, welcoming, and meaningful.
Before each visit, the sixth graders carefully prepare activities that are interesting and just right for second graders. They focus on building strong relationships with their buddies while helping them grow their reading and math skills. Activities often include word-building games, reading comprehension practice, and exploring number patterns in creative ways.
The sixth graders also love to plan seasonal and hands-on projects. One favorite activity was making a penguin bookmark, which combined creativity with reading fun. These special projects make learning even more exciting for the second graders and give the sixth graders a chance to be positive role models.
Both grade levels look forward to their buddy time. The second graders enjoy learning with an older friend, and the sixth graders gain confidence, responsibility, and leadership skills. Together, they grow not only academically but socially too—making Buddy Visits a highlight of the school year!
