Weather Delays, Closures, and Remote Learning

Inclement weather can cause a significant disruption in the learning process. In the last few years, Moniteau School District has had to use a variety of traditional snow days and remote learning (previously called Flexible Instruction Days-FID) days.

In the 2025–2026 school year, the district has decided to utilize a new model based on the recommendations of the community, the staff, and the administration.

Moniteau School District is committed to providing our students with the best possible education. We have learned from our experiences over the past two years that our students learn better in an in-person learning environment. However, we know this is not always possible. In an effort to better support our students, Moniteau School District will determine whether to use a traditional snow day or a remote learning day according to the type of cancellation.

Option #1: Cold Weather Only

When we are not able to attend school due to severe cold weather, we will use a remote learning day. The rationale behind this is that cold weather days can usually be predicted, and most often (but not always) the district is able to make the call for a remote day in advance. Remote learning can occur by utilizing paper and pencil packets or virtual meetings using a district-issued Chromebook. Each building principal will issue schedules for remote learning days at a later date with additional information regarding attendance and times of Google Meets and office hours.

Option #2: Inclement Road Conditions

When a school closure is the result of poor road conditions, this will ultimately lead to a traditional snow day. While the weathermen and women do their best to predict snowstorms, they are not always accurate. Because of this, we are unable to properly prepare in advance, and we can only make a call the morning in question. For the 2025–2026 school year, we have built five snow days into the calendar:

  • December 1, 2025
  • February 16, 2026
  • March 13, 2026
  • April 2, 2026
  • April 6, 2026

Please know that we will make all efforts to get students to school in a safe and timely manner. The district will continue to use two-hour delays as an option prior to considering a school closure. We understand that any decision we make could be an inconvenience to some families. We do not enter into decisions of this nature lightly. Your child’s safety, as well as the safety of our staff, is of utmost importance. We appreciate, in advance, your support of our commitment to excellence. In the event of a school closure (e.g. traditional snow day), please remember all after-school activities are canceled as well. In the event that we use a remote learning day, after-school activities may occur unless otherwise noted.

Please find information on inclement weather decisions at the following locations:

  • District website
  • WBUT/WISR
  • KDKA
  • WTAE
  • WPXI
  • ParentSquare notification system (phone, text, email)

We encourage you to contact your child’s school office if you are not currently receiving information from the ParentSquare system. This is the perfect opportunity to make any phone number or email changes. Thank you for your cooperation in offering Moniteau students the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential.

Remote Learning Day Frequently Asked Questions 2025–2026

Please note: We will only use remote learning days for cold weather days where we would otherwise be forced to close. Closures due to poor road conditions will still follow a traditional snow day model. If we use all traditional snow days, and we still have to close school, we would then use a remote learning day.

What is a remote learning day?

On these days, students will work remotely from their homes. Moniteau School District is permitted to use remote learning days when inclement weather requires a school closure. In our case, inclement weather would be extreme cold weather.

How do parents, guardians, and community members learn of delays and closings?

We will communicate delay and closing information via the district’s website, ParentSquare message system (phone, email and text), district Facebook page, WBUT/WISR, KDKA, WTAE, and WPXI.

How soon after a decision to close or delay will the district inform parents and guardians?

The district notifies parents/guardians via ParentSquare message system and website alerts as soon as a decision is made. Please note that the district makes every effort to avoid calling between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. We encourage you to visit the district’s website for alerts and notifications.

If the district closes for in-person learning and operates remotely, where can I find the high school and elementary school remote learning day schedules?

Building principals will communicate schedules, and we will post them on the Weather Delays, Closures, and Remote Learning page of the district website.

Will every school closure due to inclement weather be considered a remote learning day?

No, the district will utilize remote learning days for only two reasons. First, school must be closed due to extreme cold weather conditions (this does not include poor road conditions). Second, all traditional snow days have been used and we still need to close school due to inclement weather.

Who do I contact if I do not receive the automated messages by phone, email, or text?

The district contacts parents/guardians based on the contact information in the ParentSquare notification system. If you are not receiving alerts and would like to, please update your contact information in Skyward. If you have trouble logging in to Skyward, please contact your child’s school office to update your contact information.

If my child has an IEP and needs additional assistance throughout the day, whom should I contact?

You can email your child’s case manager, or you can call the special education office at (724) 637-2117, ext. 1705.
